Course description

This micromaster programme enables you to study anytime, from any location in the world, as long as you have a working internet connection. We offer personalized online learning with lots of interaction with peer students, the e-moderator and lecturers. You will study in the Elevate learning platform. To experience maximum interaction, we advise you to log in several times per week. The platform and learning materials are accessible 24/7.

This biannual programme consists of a bundle of five accredited courses as part of the MSc Epidemiology programme, as well as a capstone assignment. By taking into account the feedback of previous students, this carefully composed bundle of courses aims to provide you with extensive knowledge and essential skills in clinical research.

For every programme edition, the corresponding course editions have to be taken and in the order as listed below. Should this not be possible due to extreme circumstances, please contact us instead.

After taking these courses, participants must complete a final assignment. This is a mandatory capstone assignment in which the knowledge gained in the courses can be applied.

This program has been carefully crafted. Since the courses are accredited and the program is recognized by the Graduate School of Life Sciences, the following should be considered:
• It is essential that the courses be taken in the predetermined order.
• Course start dates, midterm deadlines, and exam dates are pre-determined, but participants can choose where and when to view web lectures and work on assignments.
• Participants must meet all deadlines or they will not be able to part-take in the exam and complete the course.
• Successful completion of all courses (including the capstone assignment) is required to earn the micromaster certificate.
• The participant will have two exam opportunities: 1 regular and 1 retake (only if grade <5.5).

Learning objectives

By the end of this program, you should be able to understand the principles and methods of clinical epidemiology and data analysis. The final assignment will enable you to apply all the combined knowledge you have gained in the courses.

Assessment

Each course includes an exam consisting of multiple-choice questions, open-ended questions, or a combination of both. Each course also offers the opportunity for re-examination.

In addition to the courses, the capstone assignment must be successfully completed to obtain the official micromaster certificate.

Capstone

The capstone is an overarching assignment in which the knowledge you have gained during the courses can be combined and applied. A topic will be chosen, which suits and incorporates the topics you have learned about in the previous courses. In addition, a rubric is used to ensure the quality and to clarify the expectations of both participants and teachers.

The average required study load for this writing assignment is 14 hours per week and the assignment lasts for 2 weeks. Not only does this compulsory assignment help you turn your knowledge into application, it rewards you with 1 ECTS upon successful completion and is the key to obtaining your certificate.

If participants are eligible for and interested in partaking in the MSc Epidemiology program, it is possible for credits earned (ECTS) from successfully completed courses in this Micromaster program to be transferred to the MSc Epidemiology program (assuming they have not been previously transferred from another official program). This, however, will not result in a reduction of the total cost for the MSc Epidemiology program.
