In the MOOC Integrity in practice, you will learn more about what acting with integrity in academic research entails and about the ways to foster it.
This course is what you call a MOOC: a Massive Open Online Course. This means that you have the chance to follow this course when and where you want, at your own pace. There will be no moderators or teachers online to answer any content-related questions. However, during this course, you are able to discuss the materials with your peers.
The course is self-paced but an indication for the workload is 3 hours per week. However, you can plan the weeks anyway you like. The course is structured along with a number of topics, in order to introduce you to a broad range of topics that are part of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). The course focuses on issues and dilemmas that you may encounter in your own academic environment while doing group work, writing a paper or collecting and processing data.
Learning unit 1: In the first l you will learn some basic principles and rules of RCR; these have been published in the ALLEA Code of Conduct (CoC).
Week 2 to 4: In weeks 2 to 4 you will learn how the CoC can apply to the different tasks and roles you have as an academic. Remember that RCR is often about ‘grey area’ situations in which it is not immediately clear what the appropriate behaviour might be.
The overall learning goals of the course are:
• Students understand that science is a social practice that can be influenced by social, cultural, economic and political factors. Scientific integrity is not a characteristic of science itself, but of the individuals who engage in scientific research.
• Students are able to recognize integrity issues and dilemmas in scientific research and are aware that the Code of Conduct is helpful to a certain extent in dealing with them. Solutions may not be simple, however, and may depend on the specifics and context of the case at hand.
• Students are able to deliberate about ways of dealing with such situations and know strategies to decide upon the best course of action.
• Students know the Code of Conduct provides principles and guidelines for Responsible Conduct of Research, which are also helpful in recognizing violations of research integrity and other unacceptable practices.
At the end of the course you will receive a certificate, if you finished all learning activities.
