This globally oriented program focuses on competencies that you need as an epidemiologist: it offers plenty of attention for research but not just as a researcher - it also enables you to judge research and implement results from research.

Our online postgraduate program can be studied completely online. It's a part-time 90 EC program and has a workload of about 14 hours per week. Our students most often finish the complete program in about three years. It does not matter if due to any circumstances it takes longer to finish: course credits will never lose validity.

This program starts twice a year: in February and in September. The corresponding deadline for February is the 1st of December. The corresponding deadline for September is the 1st of July.

Aim of the programme

The MSc Epidemiology programme is designed for professionals already working in the field who would like to further develop their research skills. The program also provides a strong foundation for scientists starting a career in clinical or epidemiological research.

The aim of the programme is to provide you with extensive knowledge and practical skills in patient-oriented research design, implementation, quantitative analysis and its application to clinical medicine and public health. The gained knowledge and skills form a solid basis for health research and disease control programs.

Online learning

In the master Epidemiology, you will have the unique opportunity to get your academic epidemiology degree simultaneous with a busy career and social life, as you will study part-time (14 hours per week). You receive personal guidance, interaction, and support during your study which consists of (interactive) web lectures, discussions, (group) assignments, expert sessions, quizzes and the like.

Study anytime, anywhere 24/7

Online learning in the MSc Epidemiology Postgraduate Online programme, enables you to study anytime, from any location in the world, as long as you have a working internet connection. We offer personalized online learning with lots of interaction with peer students, the E-moderator and lecturers. You will study in our online learning platform. To experience maximum interaction, we advise you to log in several times per week. The platform and learning materials are accessible 24/7.

The average required study workload for the courses of the programme is 14 hours per week. You will need this time to study, to keep up with the assignments and with the course material. Note that the starting dates of courses, interim deadlines, and dates of exams are fixed, but you can choose when and where you want to watch web lectures and work on assignments. The e-moderator of the course will inform you about the beginning of the course and about deadlines during the course.

Programme content

The programme consists of core courses (20 EC), specialization courses (14 EC), and a research project (56 EC).

Core courses

You will start your MSc Epidemiology Postgraduate Online Master programme with 8 core courses (20 EC). In your first year, you will learn all about the basic concepts of epidemiology and statistics. You will also have the opportunity to improve your general academic skills, such as writing high-quality research proposals or to successfully present your academic poster at scientific congresses.

Specialization courses

During the first months of the programme, you will choose your preferred specialization track. The programme offers specialization tracks in Clinical EpidemiologyGeneral Epidemiology and Veterinary Epidemiology. In each of the tracks, you will study the required specialization courses. In addition to these courses, you will be able to choose from several elective courses to reach a total of 14 EC for your specialization track.

Research project

The research project in an individual project which is conducted within the research theme of departments and institutes from Utrecht University (UU) or University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). A staff member of Utrecht University, the UMC Utrecht of an affiliated institute will supervise the research project. Research may cover a wide variety of topics such as human or veterinary infectious disease, cardiovascular disease, oncology, pharmacology, occupational health risk and many more topics of clinical or public health relevance. The projects may include fundamental or clinical-based research. The research project is finished by an oral presentation and by writing a scientific paper.

Tuition fee

This Postgraduate programme doesn’t have any fundings or scholarships. The fee of this online programme is already a reduced rate. Normally the whole programma (3-5 years) will cost €27.000, non EU/EEA).

Application Process

Registration for the MSc Epidemiology Postgraduate Online programme goes through the Admission Committee of the Utrecht University. More information on the application procedure can be found on the Utrecht University website.

The next edition of this program is set to start on February 3th, 2025. The corresponding deadline to apply for this edition is December 1st, 2025.

FAQ Epidemiology Postgraduate Online

We offer discounts for participants from Low- and Lower-middle-income Countries. Utrecht University and UMC Utrecht employees and students are eligible for a 10% discount. Unfortunately, we don’t offer any scholarships.

No, there aren’t any set times you should be online as it is an asynchronous course. All the web lectures are already pre-recorded. However there will be deadlines each week (during the week as well on weekends). Each week consists of approximately 14 study hours. To experience maximum interaction, we advise you to log in several times per week. Furthermore, you should be aware that the teacher and the e-moderator are off on weekends.

No, this is not possible because the course contains group assignments, so you can’t work ahead. Each week, a new learning unit will be made available. This means that not all the learning units are open simultaneously. Additionally, you can’t catch up on the course because there are deadlines to meet every week.

If you have ordered a course and paid immediately, you will receive an email with your login details. Sometimes, this email ends up in your spam folder. If you already have an existing account, simply log in to our learning environment. The course you just ordered will be visible in your account. If you paid by invoice, you will receive your login credentials as soon as the invoice is paid. If the course is starting soon and you haven’t received your login details, please reach out to us at info@elevatehealth.eu to inquire about the payment status.

When you have completed all the assignments or have finished the exam with a good grade, you will receive an official certificate from Utrecht University. All academic certificates issued by Utrecht University will be sent by mail to the address registered in your account. Since these certificates are official documents, they cannot be sent by email.
