Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a group of rare neurological diseases that mainly involve the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. The disease is progressive, Currently, there is no cure for ALS. Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within 3 to 5 years from when the symptoms first appear.
ALS patients need to learn how to deal with their new reality quickly! Different patients will also have different ways to deal with this. As a healthcare professional you will need to learn how to map these individual approaches and to subsequently act upon them.
The ALS Foundation requested Elevate to develop online programs teaching communication skills, recognition of the clinical- and psychological perception of illness with patients and to which specialist to refer to as a next step.
The development of (Dutch language) several ALS related courses. These curses have been successfully online for the past few years and years to come.

Its only natural for patients that when having to visit the hospital O.C. they feel stressed. The environment with people and devices they are unfamiliar with may feel hostile. Within the treatment process it is believed amongst healthcare professionals that stress impacts, or at least slows down the process from diagnose to recovery.
The development of a Virtual Reality Solution/tool introducing the O.C. to patients to become familiar to the surroundings they will be visiting in real life.
With VR solutions readily available Elevate is currently building a Virtual O.C.. It is in a prototype phase and will be tested by bachelor students of the Faculty of Medicine.
