The Elana Heart Bypass System

The Elana Heart Bypass System from AMT Medical enables surgeons to perform ‘open heart’ Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) procedures in a simpler and safer way. Elana connects a new bypass graft vessel to the blocked vessel during this procedure by using a Clip and Laser Catheter - instead of the surgeon hand-suturing the graft. In turn, this means that no traditional heart-lung machine is needed.

This CME-accredited course will give you a complete overview of the Elana Heart Bypass System and is a perfect preparation for the hands-on training.
You will find a step-by-step run-through on the procedure and get a good overview of the quality requirements.

Elana is a registered trademark of AMT Medical BV.

Course description

The topics that are discussed in the Elana Heart Bypass System module are:
– the urgency of the Elana Heart Bypass System
– how to use the Elana Heart Bypass System
– the quality assessment.

All this is explained from the perspective of the surgeon, which gives a realistic and detailed view of the procedure. Please note that this module is a theoretical introduction so once finished you are not certified to perform the technique. The training for certification for performing the surgery can be achieved at the hands-on training at AMT Medical.

  • Compare the most important differences and similarities between the Elana Heart Bypass System and CABG
  • Describe the intended use for the Elana Heart Bypass System
  • Summarize the historical context of the Elana Heart Bypass Technique
  • Explain the three different main steps in the Elana Heart Bypass System procedure
  • Describe the mounting of the graft (including the Elana Heart Clip, the fixation device, the catheter, and the lasering)
  • Describe how to adjust the Elana Heart Bypass System to the recipient (including the applicator and insertion to the perfused coronary)
  • Describe how the laser punched arteriotomy (including the laser-punch, the vacuum, and the retrieval of the flap)
  • Assess the functionality and quality assurance of the Elana Heart clip, the catheter and the connection
  • Assess flow measurements according to standard practice

Course structure

Module 1: Introduction

In this module, we will discuss what you will learn during the course, providing you with a course outline and practical information on the course. After this, our experts will explain how they see the future of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) and how the Elana Heart Bypass System will fit in this future. You will find more information on the emergence of the Elana Heart Bypass Technique. Finally, you get a chance to test your current knowledge on the subject in a short pre-test.

Module 2: The Elana Heart Bypass Procedure

In the next module you get a chance to follow the Elana Heart Bypass Procedure in small steps.
With each step you will start of with an animated video of the step, continue with all the checkpoints to keep in mind and finish with a few questions on the technique and ‘what if..’ scenarios.
Complete this module with the final quality checks needed to successfully complete the procedure.

Module 3: Course closure

In this final module, we will close up the course. You will look into the future of the Elana Heart Bypass System and get the chance to put your knowledge to the test. If you pass the final exam, you can download your course certificate and finish the course.

Certificate & Accreditation

You will receive a certificate upon completion of all required learning activities. This includes watching the videos and answering the practice questions. In addition, you have to get a score of >70% on the final exam in module 3: Course closure. All other questions and assignments are just for practice.

Accreditation NVVC/NVT 1 point

Access to the course in the online learning environment will be granted for up to 1 year after enrollment into the course.
