Josien Engel is both a nurse and a senior researcher and currently works as a lecturer on nursing at the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, and as a PhD candidate at the EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research/ VU University Medical Center Amsterdam (patient safety research group).
She gained her Bachelor of Nursing in 2007 and then studied nursing science at the University of Utrecht. For her master thesis she studied in a before-after study the effect of a tailored multifaceted implementation strategy in the implementation of an evidence based nutritional guideline for stroke patients.

Josien began her nursing career at the Radboud University Medical center in Nijmegen, where she worked at several departments, including traumatology, infectiology/internal medicine and neurology. In 2011 she started as a junior researcher/PhD candidate at the EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research, where she was responsible for the evaluation of one of ten high risk patient safety themes (i.e. theme ‘optimal care for acute coronary syndromes’) of a large national quality improvement program in the Netherlands called VMS. Currently, she is finishing her PhD regarding the application and implementation of cardiac risk scores in the management of patients with Non-ST-elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome, for which she conducted several quantitative and qualitative studies
