Interview with...

Loay Alaswadi

from Yemen

Loay Alaswadi enrolled in a Control Strategies for Infectious and Non-Communicable Diseases course in 2013

A nice way to socialize and exchange broad experiences among my international colleagues

Introduction

My name is Loay Alaswadi, 28 years old, I was working as a HIV/AIDS Coordinator at UNDP and before that I was working in a vaccination project funded by GAVI Alliance in Yemen.

Distance learning

I had an experience before in distance learning when I was doing my bachelor degree in UK. The lecturers used to put the lectures notes on a learning website which you could access via an username and a password. However, it was not as interactive as what Elevate has. In Elevate you get the chance to interact with your fellow classmates and exchange documents and feedback. I would definitely recommend this type of learning to all students in all organizations, because "personally" i found it more helpful to learn by explaining to one another rather than just reading lecture notes.

Course Control Strategies for Communicable and Non-communicable Disease

The course I did for Elevate was Control Strategies for Communicable and Non-communicable Disease. The course was very interesting and makes you think in a professional manner. The thing that I enjoyed the most in this course was the interaction among the students, since all of us come from different countries and background, so I get to learn about 20 countries at the same time. I would definitely recommend this course because it expands your knowledge and it helps thinking of strategies and interventions that could work to overcome certain diseases in your country.

Benefits

For this particular course, you get to learn about the diseases and varieties of health issues such as nutrition, heat diseases, and so on and how they are spread and their causes in order to find out suitable and feasible interventions and strategies to overcome and manage them, as well as learning about how to fulfill people's health needs.
