Introduction

My name is Astrid van Strien and I am 28-years-old. I received my medical exam in 2007 from Utrecht University. In 2008, I began training to be a clinical geriatrician, which I will complete in 2013. In 2011, I started training to be clinical pharmacologist.

The course 'Clinical Epidemiology'

As part of my clinical pharmacologist training, I took "Clinical Epidemiology", which was a compulsory course for me. This linked nicely with the basic epidemiology knowledge I gained during my medical studies. The most important thing I learned from this course is the methodology of clinical research, which enables you to critically evaluate scientific papers. The course will also help you to design your own research.

Elevate's e-learning courses

Prior to this course, I participated in another e-learning course called "Introduction to Statistics and SPSS." The big advantage of these e-learning modules is that you can organise your time the way you like it; it's very flexible. I had to work (part-time) at the clinic during the course, ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍but was able to arrange my studies around this.‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍ Another huge benefit of Elevate was the quick, personal contact with the e-coordinator of the course, who was very responsive to any questions participants had. One difference, in comparison to regular face-to-face classes, is that it can take some time before you receive an answer from your fellow students when you discuss topics in an online debate. In conclusion I was very satisfied with Elevate's e-courses. Especially if you have a busy schedule, the flexibility of an e-learning module is very convenient. Just make sure you have your own computer to work on.
