Alexander Horsch

from Netherlands

Alexander Horsch enrolled in a Clinical Epidemiology course in 2013

It’s a great innovative way to study!

Introduction

My name is Alexander, I am a radiologist, 41 years old, currently doing a fellowship interventional radiology in UMC Utrecht. Also, I am a PhD candidate with the Dutch acute Stroke Trial (DUST) which aims to add imaging criteria to the evaluation and treatment of ischemic stroke patients.

On Distance learning

I think distance learning is a very good idea, especially since it saves me time. I work long days and I don’t have the time to follow face-to-face courses. Now I can do the activities of this course in the evenings and weekends. Distance learning allows me to combine work and study, which I prefer. It’s a great innovative way to study, however it is not suitable for everyone. It requires discipline to educate yourself outside the boundaries of the classroom. If you are not that disciplined, it will be hard to effectively study online.

Distance learning allows me to combine work and study.

Clinical Epidemiology

I enjoyed the course. It would have helped me to know that I had to prepare (read a specified book) before starting the course, which I didn’t know. Reading the book was not just supplementary, but was really used in the course, in combination with the web lectures, which proved effectively. Also, there was a lot of discussion about the book, though some of the interaction was not very relevant.

Benefits

What I liked best is that I could manage my study time and study whenever I wanted to. The content of the course was certainly helpful to me, since I can put it to good use in the prognostic study which I follow at the moment.

What I liked best is that I could manage my study time and study whenever I wanted to.
